Hannah Callowhill Penn

Happy ‪#‎WomensHistoryMonth‬! Hannah Callowhill Penn (1671-1726) is sometimes called the first female governor of Pennsylvania. Born into a prosperous Quaker family in England, Hannah married William Penn on March 5, 1696. For 14 years, while William suffered a series of strokes and after he passed away, Hannah Penn acted as proprietor of the Colony of Pennsylvania from 1712-1726. Historians have recognized her as a capable administrator, particularly for her skillful management of relations with Native Americans and of the boundary dispute between Pennsylvania and Maryland.
